A common augmentation pattern is adding low-dose trazodone at night to help with sleep disruption caused by an SSRI or SNRI, or to add a modest antidepressant effect, while continuing the primary antidepressant during the day. This should only be done under a prescriber's direction because of serotonin syndrome risk when combining serotonergic drugs.
Augmentation therapy
Also called: Add-on therapy
Adding a second medication to an existing treatment to boost its effect, rather than replacing the first medication. Low-dose trazodone is sometimes added at bedtime to another antidepressant.
