Bioavailability

The proportion of a dose that reaches the bloodstream in active form. Food can change how quickly and how completely oral trazodone is absorbed.

Taking trazodone with food can increase the total amount absorbed while slowing how quickly peak levels are reached and lowering the peak concentration compared with taking it on an empty stomach. This is why some prescribers advise taking it consistently the same way (with or without food) rather than switching back and forth.
