Orthostatic hypotension

Also called: Postural hypotension

A drop in blood pressure that occurs when standing up from sitting or lying down, which can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting.

Because trazodone blocks alpha-1 adrenergic receptors, it can blunt the body's normal reflex that keeps blood pressure steady when changing position. This effect is more pronounced at higher doses and in older adults, and is a common reason clinicians start with a lower dose and increase gradually.
