Trazodone and buspirone

Buspirone, an anti-anxiety medication with serotonergic activity, is sometimes combined with trazodone but adds to overall serotonergic load.

Editorially reviewed
Key points
  • Sometimes combined clinically for anxiety and mood symptoms
  • Still adds to overall serotonergic load
  • Monitor especially if other serotonergic drugs are also used

Buspirone is used for generalized anxiety and has its own effects on serotonin receptors. It is sometimes prescribed alongside trazodone, but the combination still adds to total serotonergic activity and should be monitored by the prescribing clinician, particularly if other serotonergic medications are also involved.
