Trazodone and rifampin

Rifampin, used to treat tuberculosis and some other infections, is a strong CYP3A4 inducer that can meaningfully reduce trazodone's effectiveness.

Key points
  • A strong, well-documented CYP3A4 inducer
  • Effect can last through a multi-month TB treatment course
  • May require increased monitoring or a dose adjustment

Rifampin is one of the strongest known inducers of CYP3A4. In someone taking trazodone, starting rifampin can lower trazodone blood levels enough to reduce its effect on mood or sleep. This is particularly relevant for tuberculosis treatment courses, which often last months.
