How does trazodone compare to zolpidem (Ambien) for sleep?

Short answer: Zolpidem is FDA-approved specifically for insomnia and works on GABA receptors; trazodone is used off-label and works differently, through serotonin and antihistamine activity. Neither is automatically "better" — the right choice depends on the individual.

Editorially reviewed

Zolpidem (Ambien) is specifically approved for insomnia and is a Schedule IV controlled substance with its own dependence and next-day impairment considerations. Trazodone is not scheduled, and some prescribers favor it in people with a history of substance use concerns for this reason, or in people who also have coexisting depression or anxiety trazodone might help with. This is a decision to make with your prescriber based on your full health picture, not a one-size-fits-all comparison.
