Is low-dose trazodone for sleep addictive?

Short answer: Trazodone is not a controlled substance and is not considered addictive in the way benzodiazepines or Z-drugs can be, but abrupt discontinuation after regular use can still cause withdrawal-type symptoms.

Editorially reviewed

Trazodone does not carry the same physical dependence and misuse profile as benzodiazepines or certain other sleep medications, and it is not DEA-scheduled. However, stopping it abruptly after weeks or months of regular use can cause discontinuation symptoms like rebound insomnia, anxiety, or irritability — which is different from addiction but still means tapering is often the better approach.
